Our designs embody elegance and aesthetics in every fiber. Using the very latest technology (such as seamless and hem-less knitting or soft mercerization), top quality fabrics from carefully selected premium natural fibers are processed and combined with exclusive French lace or Swiss embroidery to create unique garments of inimitable quality.
1884 - 1930
Tradition meets innovation – only those who know their past can shape the future.
In 1884 Albert Handschin founds a knitwear factory in Liestal, Switzerland. His vision: Lingerie of natural fibers, soft and comfortable to wear, for the elegant, modern woman of the times. In 1913, the trademark HANRO is registered - composed of the name of Albert HANdschin and of his business partner Carl ROnus.
From the very outset, HANRO focuses on its patented circular-knitting technology, producing light, waist-accentuating “Spencer” tops and bodysuits of finest wool and silk. Originally, their function is to warm the body. Over time, they develop into fashionable and seductive items of lingerie.
1950 - 1960
In the 1950s and 1960s, elegant nightgowns and robes establish HANRO’s reputation among the upper-class society. HANRO’s collections are a reflection of Hollywood glamour. Seductive, body-accentuating lace lingerie celebrates the newly discovered femininity. Just one example is Marilyn Monroe who wore HANRO undergarments in the famous scene in “The seven year itch”.
1970 - 1990
The 1970s saw the trend of raschel lace and new color schemes, and HANRO’s creative designs of raschel tricot rise to the top of the lingerie industry. In 1980s and 1990s, HANRO leads the way towards a new puristic sense of aesthetics and wellness, by launching tops from finest mercerized cotton. The Cotton Seamless Spaghetti Top, also worn by Nicole Kidman in “Eyes Wide Shut” becomes the new bestseller.
During the last decade, the modern HANRO loungewear collections increasingly reflect the casual trend of the new century. Casual outerwear shirts and dresses playfully link outerwear and underwear in a fashionable manner.
In 2014, HANRO celebrated its 130th anniversary.
In 2016, HANRO was awarded "Designer of the Year 2016" from the world's largest and most important lingerie tradeshow SALON INTERNATIONAL DE LA LINGERIE in Paris among 500 brands.
