| Colored and white threads are looped in the circular knitting machine to form a stylish striped pattern. After each round, the fabric becomes a little longer. Here in HANRO’s own textile production at the company’s premises in Mäder, the fabric for the ‘Laura’ nightwear collection from the Spring/Summer 2021 collection is being produced. More than 365 days of heart and soul, meticulous planning, and attention to detail have gone into creating ‘Laura’. It takes more than a year before the finished products become available to purchase. 180 out of these days are spent designing, selecting the thread, the type of knit, and the finishing. |
| The fabric is knitted on very fine machines that meet the latest standards. For the ‘Laura’ collection, there are 36 needles over 2.54 centimeters, resulting in an outstandingly fine, light, flowing fabric. For a high-quality end result, the fabric is given a mercerization treatment after the knitting process. Causticizing the fabric gives it a glossy, soft finish. This process is not commonly used in Europe and therefore, it is really special. |

| Expert Laura Florineth tells us all about the fabric production of the 'Laura' collection. |
| How long does it take to knit the fabric for the “Laura” collection? The process begins with the development of the fabrics. First, we receive a draft from the HANRO in-house design team of what the stripes should look like. Then, we look at how we can implement that on the knitting machine. After that, we obtain thread price quotes from European suppliers and receive lab prototypes to fine-tune the colors. We knit a meter of fabric and, if everything is the way we want it and we get the approval, then we can start the actual production of the fabric. Lastly, we knit on the knitting machine for about three weeks to produce the striped fabric for the ‘Laura’ collection. |
| What are the challenges in knitting the stripes? The configuration of the thread reels is crucial that we have the stripes in the right color and in the right place when it comes off the machine. The correct setting for the knitting machine is done by hand and is a matter of millimeters, otherwise there will be inconsistencies in the stripes. Again, this requires well-trained staff and years of experience. What is so special about the fabrics that you produce for HANRO? For the unique HANRO fabrics, we use particularly high-quality raw materials from OEKO-TEX®-certified thread suppliers from all over Europe, including cotton, wool, cashmere, and silk. We also knit on very fine machines. |
| For the ‘Laura’ collection, there are 36 needles over 2.54 centimeters. This results in an extraordinarily fine, light, flowing fabric, and you don’t see the transition between the stripes. How does the fabric get its beautiful sheen and softness? After knitting, the fabric undergoes a finishing process. Causticizing the fabric gives it a glossy, soft finish. This process is not commonly used in Europe and therefore, it is really special. HANRO places great value on the finishing of the fabric. It is down to this process that the HANRO products get their incomparably soft touch and unique sheen. |
CUTTING AND SEWING
A JOURNEY TO PORTUGAL
| From Mäder, the rolls of finished fabric go to Portugal. The pieces are cut in HANRO’s own sewing facilities that employ around 260 employees. |
| The seamstresses then create the 'Laura' nightwear from the fabric. This handiwork produces two styles of nightshirts and two pajamas sets. |
| Finally, every finished product undergoes the final inspection, which done by hand. This is the only way to ensure the highest quality garments arrive on the sales floor. |
